- A few days ago I posted a question concerning long delays I was experiencing
- starting Trumpet Newsreader. I found the answer. The program has to read and
- calculate its .ini file against unread posts. If you keep your number of
- subscribed groups small, discard all unsubscribed groups, then do a 'catchup'
- operation on all groups it loads really fast and does not give as many errors
- at runtime. I was simply oversubscribed and had a ton of unread posts. The
- answer was to delete the .ini file and start from scratch, limiting my
- subscriptions only to groups that I read frequently. I ended up paring it
- down from 200 subscribed groups to 64 and now can just go from group to group
- each session. It is much faster this way. Hope this helps!

- I have written such a beast and the latest version should be available on

- Check the date on the zip file, if it's not March, then wait and try again,

-
- Both of these should have to do with your news server--the computer you logon to
- to get your newsgroups. It probably doesn't carry uiuc.sw.mosaic, at least not yet.
- And who knows, it may never. What you need to do is figure out who the system
- administrator is for your news server (otherwise known as an NNTP server). That's
- the person with the control to add, delete and modify newsgroups.
-
- As for NewtNews not asking if you want to subscribe to new groups, again, that's
- your news server. You should have a file called subs0000.nws in your chameleon
- directory (I think the directory's called "netmanag"). It's a text file and it
- contains all the newsgroups available the last time you logged on. If what's
- available doesn't match what's in this file, then you get the question about adding
- new newsgroups.
-
- >Furthermore, when NewtNews chooses all the groups that I have previously
- >selected, it returns to being an icon and so I have to double click on it
- >again.
-
- This sounds like either a NewtNews setting or a Windows setting that runs the program
- as an icon. Not knowing your setup, I can't say much about that.
-
- >Can someone please help?
-
- I've tried.

- What version of PC/TCP are you using? A scan of one of our PC's here that has
- PC/TCP version 2.11 does not find a WINSOCK.DLL at all. Version 2.2 and now
- 2.3 _DO_ include it. MOSAIC and the Trumpet news reader both work fine over
- PC/TCP 2.2 and 2.3. I have not called FTP to verify it, but it appears that
- WINSOCK support was a new feature of PC/TCP 2.2.
